Meals
I am a very firm believer in healthy eating. Especially for children. However I do know how hard it can be to get children to eat a wide range of fruit and veg every day. In all meals I prepare I will choose a wide variety and I will also incorporate as much fruit and veg into recipes. For instance if we are baking cakes and buns I will add grated carrot or grated apple into the mixture.
I think children should be encouraged to eat fruit and veg but by hiding it in recipes as well then it means they will definitely get all the vitamins and nutrients they need to stay strong and healthy. For example my Chilli includes the following veg. Onion, carrot, celery, kidney beans, baked beans, sweet corn and peppers. Veg is cut up small so children do not notice as much. I only use free range eggs.
I have a breadmaker, all bread that is eaten will be baked fresh every day. I will ask children to take part choosing recipes so that they will be more interested in trying different varieties. All meals and snacks are prepared by myself and children will be encouraged to help in the preparation of meals. I operate a ‘no junk’ policy– this includes processed foods (such as high salt and fat).
I will sit and eat alongside the children at meal times and provide a good role model for healthy eating. Children will be encouraged to develop good eating skills and table manners. Children will be expected to sit at the table or in a high chair during meal times.
